Haida Filters

I use and recommend the Haida M10 Filter Holder System. Haida’s drop-in filter system is very innovative and image quality is excellent. Haida also has a solid lineup of drop-in and glass filters. I switched to the Haida system from the Formatt-Hitech holders. The Haida M10 also holds 100mm square filters, so I’m able to continue using most of my existing square filters while enjoying the more modern, flexible holder system.

The base filter kit comes with an adapter ring, holder, and drop-in polarizer. Select the kit to match the diameter of your lens (67mm, 72mm, 77mm, etc.). Add in one of their other filters and you’re off to the races. Read my full review.

The holder can also hold up to two 100mm square glass filters. That’s in addition to the drop-in slot.

Adapter rings come in a variety of diameters to match your lenses (ex: 67mm, 72mm, 77mm). I have an adapter ring for each of my lenses. I can quickly move the holder to another lens while in the field.

For my video work, I use Haida’s magnetic variable ND filter kit. I get a range of 2 to 9 stops of light reduction, and the magnetic filters make field workflow smooth and fluid. Watch my full review of these filters here.

Drop-in filters work just like traditional filters. Go-to densities for my seascape work are 4-stop and 6-stop NDs. For incredibly long exposures, or for long exposure in bright daylight, I reach for the monster 17-stop ND.

My typical setup is the polarizer in the drop-in slot and 100mm square NDs in the front of the M10 holder.

A 4-stop is my go-to filter in the field. Cutting 4 stops of light usually gets me that silky look on the water I'm looking for, while maintaining detailed fingers of water.

When 4-stops isn't enough, I have the 6 stop at the ready. It's also very useful when the best light is just after sunrise or just before sunset, when I need to cut more light.

For extra-long exposures, I keep an 10-stop ND filter in my bag. I use it to smooth out the ocean or to make people magically disappear in busy areas.

Formatt-Hitech

I switched to the Haida M10 holder system over Formatt-Hitech to avoid vignetting at wide angles. Watch this video to see why I switched to the Haida M10. I continue to use the Firecrest 100mm glass filters with my Haida holder system. The Formatt-Hitech brand filters are top quality and produce great photos.

No landscape kit would be complete without a circular polarizer. I use my polarizer to manage reflections in a scene. It also acts as a light ND filter (1 stop or so).

I keep two filter holders in my bag. One has my polarizer permanently mounted, with an open slot for an additional ND filter. The other I have setup with two slots for ND filters. I could have three slots, but never found the need to stack up that many filters!
