The Foggy Harbor

The Foggy Harbor | Black & White Gallery

I've been to this spot on Harbor Island in San Diego many times. On this morning, a layer of fog engulfed the harbor, completely hiding the downtown skyline. Most of the harbor's residents merely hinted their presence. A lone piling stood proud. A simple, elegant scene, calming, free of distractions.

The weather changes how you approach a scene and in this example, vastly simplifies the composition. With a thick fog, the temptations of trying to "fit it all in" and capture the water, the boats, the city, the sky, are washed away. It's just not possible. But the result can still be compelling.

"Bad" weather isn't so bad after all - at least for photography.
